Carry On Jack (1963, Jim Dale, Juliet Mills)
‘Twas on the good ship Venus, commanded by Captain Fearless (Kenneth Williams), that midshipman Albert Poop-Decker (Bernard Cribbins) found himself demoted in favour of a fresh-faced, eager youth with curves in surpising places (Juliet Mills). While Poop-Decker foments mutiny, Fearless and his martinet second-in-command, First Officer Howett (Donald Houston) try to run a tight ship; but coming up on the horizon is the invading Spanish fleet…
With regulars such as Hattie Jacques and Sid James absent, Carry On Jack was never going to be one of the highlights in the canon but the shotgun effect of the gags, from a hilarious walking the plank to a flogging that goes badly wrong, and from a nasty medical operation to the surprising rout of the enemy, Carry On’ s only director, Gerald Thomas, keeps the action going fast enough to hide the odd bare patch.
