Carry On Regardless (1961, Sid James, Kenneth Williams)
The Carry On formula was simple and if sophistication was notable by its absence, the result was consistent: popular entertainment with stars like Sidney James, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims and Charles Hawtrey.
Here screenwriter Norman Hudis delivered a high quota of low laughs in the episodic adventures of the enjoyably caricatured staff of Sidney James’ ‘Helping Hands’ agency, which supplies staff for a variety of outside jobs, and whose employees include Carry On regulars Williams, Connor, Hawtrey and Sims, along with Liz Fraser and Bill Owen. But the jobs that the agency attracts range from the bizarre to the curious with even the simplest task proving too much for the willing staff.
A prime early example of the genre, Carry On Regardless also features a splendid gallery of familiar faces such as Esma Cannon, Terence Alexander, Fenella Fielding, Jerry Desmonde and Joan Hickson. Under the sprightly direction of Gerald Thomas, it delivers a constant supply of visual and verbal jokes, which still makes immensely entertaining viewing.
