Cats and Dogs (2001, Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Perkins)

All humans know that cats and dogs rarely get along but what they don’t know is that they have been waging war against each other from the beginning of time (well, since they were domesticated). With the situation at stalemate, things threaten to swing the dogs’ way when scientist Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) comes close to perfecting a serum that will cure all humans of their allergies to dogs, giving canines the upper hand. Meanwhile, the cats are perfecting a serum that will make all humans allergic to dogs. The race is on for the dogs to protect Brody and foil the cats while the felines fight to stop Brody. Unfortunately, owing to a mix-up, Brody’s assigned guard is a young, inexperienced secret agent puppy called Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire) while the cat’s leader, Mr Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes, Jack from Will and Grace ) has an array of weapons and attack squads at his command The final battle between the species begins…

The phrase ‘family film’ is bandied around but this fits the description perfectly. Eager but inexperienced Lou is helped by veteran Butch and tech-ace Ivy (voiced by Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon) but ironically, the cats steal the picture with Mr Tinkles the double for Blofeld’s favourite moggy. Younger viewers will enjoy the mix of CGI and animals that make all the characters believable, adults will enjoy the filmic references to spy and martial arts films and, of course, The Matrix . And, of course, no animals were harmed in the making of this film…
