Daddy Nostalgia (1990, Dirk Bogarde, Jane Birkin)
Bertrand Tavernier, one of France’s most esteemed filmmakers, directed Dirk Bogarde in his last film role as Tony Russell, an aging businessman who’s forced to take stock of his life, in acclaimed drama Daddy Nostalgia. While recovering from a heart operation in his French villa, Tony is visited by his grown daughter, Caroline (Jane Birkin), who wants to reach a final understanding with him after years of feeling emotionally neglected. But it’s difficult, maybe impossible, for two people who are in many ways strangers to talk about intimate matters so late in the game.
The movie’s melancholy is deeply heartfelt: Bertrand Tavernier directed Daddy Nostalgia shortly after losing his own father, writer and poet Rene Tavernier, and not long after Dirk Bogarde lost his companion of several decades to cancer.
