Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Orion 1988, Steve Martin, Michael Caine)

This remake of the 1964 comedy ‘Bedtime Story’ features the coupling of Michael Caine and Steve Martin as two rival con men, the former suave and British and the other crude and American, seeking to out-scam each other on the French Riviera. On a bet, they both target a naive soap queen (Glenne Headley) to see who can bilk her first, with hilarious and poetically just results. Caine was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

Before becoming one of Hollywood’s foremost cinematographers in the 1980s, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Director of Photography Michael Ballhaus was the photographer of choice for the brilliant German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a key figure in the New German Cinema that arose in the 1970s.
