Dune (1984, Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis)

In Frank Herbert’s epic, Lynch and his writers realised the classic novel for the screen and, said Variety, ‘a great deal of imagination has been poured into visualising Herbert’s universe.’ In bare synopsis, the stunning space story, set in the year 10,991 is the story of a warrior saviour (KYLE MacLACHLAN) who comes to power and leads the lowly inhabitants of the planet Dune, the sole source of the coveted spice melange, to victory over the evil emperor and his minion.

‘All down the line’, said Variety, ‘the contributions of the production team are quite special… there’s just about always something going on for the senses to appreciate. The cast is first rate…’. FRANCESCA ANNIS and JURGEN PROCHNOW make an outstandingly attractive royal couple, SIAN PHILLIPS is mesmerising as the powerful witch, BRAD DOURIF is effectively loony. Time Out praised ‘some of the most impressive sci-fi set designs since Blade Runner (all Victorian Gothic pipes, hissing steam and heavy duty brass)… KENNETH MACMILLAN is enjoyably outrageous as the bloated, floating boil-covered baddy’.
