Finest Hours, The (Disney 2016, Chris Pine, Casey Affleck)
Based on a true story The Finest Hours takes us back to 1952 when one of the worst ever storms hits the East Coast of New England. Off the coast of Cape Cod a tanker is badly damaged and quite literally torn in half. Knowing that the men aboard have no chance of survival if help isn’t got to them a four man Coast Guard crew led by Bernie Webber battles against the odds and incredibly fearsome conditions to rescue the 32 men still on board.
A truly heart pounding at times story of man vs nature. Well made, especially the battering storm sequences and with a couple of strong lead performances from Chris Pine as the Coast Guard pilot who has something to prove following a disaster in which lives were lost the previous year and Casey Affleck as Ray Sybert, the engineer on the crippled boat who comes up with a plan to give the men on the boat longer odds of survival.
A subplot involving Bernie’s romance with a girl called Miriam drags a little but only a little.
