Five years after the events of the original Ghostbusters film, the cast of Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis are reunited for this trip back to the world of ghouls and ectoplasmic sludge.
The team has been plagued by lawsuits, court orders and accusations of fraud and now lead lives of semi-obscurity. Dr Raymond Stantz (Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Hudson) eke out humiliating existences as children’s party entertainers, while Dr Peter Venkman (Murray) has been reduced to fronting a second-rate cable TV show, The World of Psychic .
When Venkman’s old flame Dana Barrett (Weaver), now a single mother with a young baby and an art restorer at the Manhattan Art Museum, finds her pram speeding away from her with paranormal force, she calls in her old friends to discover the cause. They uncover a river of ectoplasm bubbling in the New York sewers created by the negative feelings of the city’s inhabitants and heralding doom for them all. Meanwhile, Dana’s boss Janosz (MacNichol) has a dastardly plan of his own as, possessed by the spirit of Vigo, a 16th Century Carpathian tyrant featured in a museum portrait, he is ordered to kidnap a baby and deliver it to Vigo’s spirit on New Year’s Eve so he can be reborn and rule the world. The Ghostbusters face the task of rescuing Dana’s baby from peril and encouraging New Yorkers to share the spirit of the season in order to banish the ectoplasm.
