Honorary Consul, The (Paramount 1983, Richard Gere, Michael Caine)
The screen adaptation of Graham Greene’s esteemed novel, The Honorary Consul, about a doctor (Richard Gere) who, desperate to win his activist father’s release from a Paraguayan prison, agrees to take part in a political kidnapping. All he has to do is get information out of the sodden British consul (the wonderful Michael Caine), who also happens to be the unhappy husband of the doctor’s adulterous lover. Brooding, dark, and moody.
