Immortal Sergeant, The (TCF 1943, Henry Fonda, Maureen O’Hara)
Set in the Libyan Desert of World War II, ‘The Immortal Sergeant’ stars Thomas Mitchell as a lionhearted British Sergeant and Henry Fonda as Mitchell’s withdrawn Corporal. When his patrol becomes lost in the desert, Mitchell leads his men valiantly. But after he’s killed in the desert, it is Fonda who must take charge.
Thankfully, Fonda channels Mitchell’s fighting spirit, becoming a leader worthy of his mentor. Maureen O’Hara plays Fonda’s love interest, who appears throughout the film in flashbacks.
Henry Fonda enlisted in the Navy to fight in WWII shortly after making this.
