Jewel Of The Nile, The (1985, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner)
The Jewel Of The Nile a sequel to Romancing the Stone re-unites the three stars for another comedy/drama/adventure romp with, quite rightly, little of the successful formula changed. Jack Colton and Joan Wilder (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner) are cruising the world in their yacht but she’s asked by a smooth yet slightly sinister Arab, Omar (Spiros Focas) to use her skill as a writer to tell his life story.
Left to his own devices, Jack meets up with Ralph (Danny DeVito) again, who is hunting for the mythical treasure, The Jewel of the Nile. As the pair bicker their way into another adventure, so Omar and Joan’s paths cross with theirs as rebellion and turmoil beckon.
Neither Douglas nor Turner were mad about making a sequel but, contractually bound, they had no choice and in fairness, there’s no sign of them sleepwalking their reprised roles. The script may not be as sharp as the original, scripted by the late Diane Thomas but the two writers drafted in still manage to keep the pace flowing and veteran director Teague rightfully allows his three leads to run away with the film.
