Male Animal, The (Warner Bros 1942, Henry Fonda, Olivia de Havilland)
New Yorker magazine writer James Thurber’s popular battle-of-the-sexes stage drama The Male Animal (cowritten by director Elliott Nugent) with classic performances from Henry Fonda as a clueless, distracted college professor, Olivia de Havilland as his neglected wife, and Jack Carson as the homecoming football hero who comes between them.
When the movie was remade in 1952 as She’s Working Her Way Through College, the filmmakers removed the liberal ideology of the original film in favor of less controversial topics in light of the McCarthy-era Red scare.
