Manhunter (1986, Brian Cox, William Petersen)

Writer/director Michael Mann’s visceral adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel, Red Dragon, introduced the character of fiendishly brilliant serial killer Hannibal The Cannibal’ Lecter, chillingly played here by Brian Cox, in a performance that differs from but compares favorably with Anthony Hopkins’ in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Getting inside the mind of Lecter has caused criminal profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) to suffer a breakdown, but Graham is now being called out of retirement to help catch another killer, ‘The Tooth Fairy.’ His investigation leads him back into the web of Lecter, now jailed and looking for revenge against Graham, the man who captured him. Tense, visually exciting, with superb performances throughout.’

Two actors appeared in Manhunter and The Silence of the Lambs (1991)-both based on Thomas Harris novels featuring malevolent genius Hannibal Lecter-but playing different roles in each: Frankie Faison was Lt. Fisk in Manhunter and Barney in Lambs, and Dan Butler was a fingerprint expert in the earlier film and an entomologist in the later.
