Martial arts star Steven Seagal makes his directorial debut with this environmental action picture set in Alaska. Former government agent Forrest Taft (Steven Seagal) takes a job as a firefighter for Aegis Oil, a corporation headed by the nefarious Michael Jennings (Michael Caine). When he discovers Jennings’s intention to install a drilling plant on land about to be reverted to Inuit control, Taft decides to fight for the rights of the local people, with help from a native activist (Joan Chen).

Steven Seagal’s five-minute environmental lecture at the end of On Deadly Ground was cut down from fifteen minutes upon the insistence of the studio.
