Other Side of the Wind, The (Netflix 2018, John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich)

Although it has an official release date of 2018 The Other Side of the Wind is actually a long lost Orson Welles movie that was filmed on and off between 1970 and 1976 with several of the lead roles being taken by legendary film directors such as John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich and Claude Chabrol.

Plotwise the movie follows famed director J.J. ‘Jake’ Hannaford as he returns to Hollywood after many years in Europe. He is trying to get his comeback movie made and there is plentiful footage of the movie he is trying to make, style wise it channels into a faux documentary style.

Definitely a curates egg, a whole book (Orson Welles’s Last Movie by John Karp) has been written about the movie and indeed it remained unfinished at the time of Welles’ death in 1985 however a team led by Peter Bogdanovich, the producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza, and the editor Bob Murawski spent months sifting through all the available footage to create a cohesive finished product.

The Other Side of the Wind received a world premiere on 31 August 2018 at the 75th Venice Film Festival before gaining a Netflix premiere on 2 November 2018. A companion documentary, They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead was released on Netflix at the same time.
