Poseidon Adventure, The (TCF 1972, Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine)
The Poseidon Adventure is the granddaddy of disaster flicks. When an earthquake sends a tidal wave over a luxury liner on New Year’s Eve, the top-heavy vessel capsizes. Ten survivors journey through the ship to escape; worthwhile simply to see Shelley Winters squeezing through air shafts, and the toppling a Christmas tree. It spawned a terrible sequel, ‘Beyond the Poseidon Adventure’, along with countless imitators.
Filming of ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ was halted twice, due to prohibitive costs, and only resumed after producer Irwin Allen and private investors agreed to match 20th Century Fox’s budget.
Academy Award Nominations: 8, including Best Actress: Shelley Winters.
