Prisoner of Second Avenue, The (1975, Jack Lemmon, Anne Bancroft)
An adaptation by Simon of his Broadway hit. An ad executive (Jack Lemmon) loses confidence in himself and the future when he’s handed his pink slip. In addition he and wife Anne Bancroft suffer New York indignities including apartment break-ins. Occasionally funny, but with plenty of dark moments. Stallone and F. Murray Abraham have early small roles.
Neil Simon’s favorite theatrical director, Gene Saks, appears in the role of Mel’s brother Harry in The Prisoner of Second Avenue. Saks directed a number of films adapted from Simon plays, including The Odd Couple (1968).
