Private Affairs of Bel Ami, The (UA 1947, George Sanders, Angela Lansbury)
A juicy adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s novel, ‘Bel Ami’, performed by an excellent cast. Set in Paris in the 1880s, it is a chronicle of a young cad (George Sanders) who makes his way by charming women out of money and influence and throwing them away when he gets what he wants. But he misses out on a true love with Angela Lansbury.
The 1885 novel by de Maupassant has been adapted in at least five different languages and by film directors in at least seven different countries.
