Private Lives (MGM 1931, Robert Montgomery, Norma Shearer)

An adaptation of Noel Coward’s comedy about a bickering couple who find they can’t live with or without each other. Robert Montgomery and Norma Shearer have split long ago and are married to others (Reginald Denny and Una Merkel). The two couples meet at a French resort, and the old magic is rekindled between Montgomery and Shearer. Sharp, witty, and immortal.

When preparing the film of Private Lives, MGM producer Irving Thalberg received permission to film a performance of Noel Coward’s stage drama to be used for study by the screen actors.
