Proposition, The (1998, Kenneth Branagh, Madeleine Stowe)
An intriguing drama starring Kenneth Branagh, William Hurt and Madeline Stowe. Set in Boston in 1935 Hurt plays lawyer Arthur Barret, who discovers he is infertile. Both he and his wife Eleanor (Stowe) are desperate for a child. Their solution is to pay a law student to impregnate Eleanor, but with a pregnancy still not forthcoming the family appears to be imploding. Taking refuge from the growing crisis at home Eleanor turns to Father Michael McKinnon (Branagh) who has recently arrived in Boston from England, for comfort. However, the comfort soon turns to a solace of a more than spiritual kind.
