Providence (1977, John Gielgud, Dirk Bogarde)

French director Alain Resnais (Last Year at Marienbad; Hiroshima, Mon Amour) makes his first film in English with mixed results. The puzzling comedy is difficult to unravel. It’s set inside the mind of a dying 78-year-old writer (John Gielgud) who drunkenly constructs a last novel about his none too likeable family members.

The New Yorker commented… ‘The movie is peculiarly fastidious and static: you feel as if it were going to dry up and blowaway.’
