Quiet American, The (2002, Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser)

Published

Michael Caine stars in this political drama from director Phillip Noyce (Clear and Present Danger, 1994), an intriguing love triangle set in 1952 Vietnam and based on the Graham Greene story. Caine plays the opium-addicted Thomas Fowler, a Saigon-based British journalist who falls for a beautiful young Vietnamese girl (Hai Yen Do) and tries to keep her from an admiring idealistic American (Brendan Fraser), who may not be what he seems. Adapted from the Graham Greene novel, this acclaimed drama is graced with beautiful photography by Australian Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love, 2000) and intelligent standout performances by its three leads.

The Quiet American is one of two Phillip Noyce period movies to be released by Miramax in late 2002: The other is the 1930s Australian drama, Rabbit-Proof Fence.
