Rains of Ranchipur, The (TCF 1955, Richard Burton, Lana Turner)

Published

on

In The Rains of Ranchipur a rich and markedly promiscuous Englishwoman (Lana Turner) arrives in a small Indian town with her husband (Michael Rennie) and pursues the handsome local Hindu doctor (Richard Burton). After some resistance, they eventually end up in each other’s arms and Turner finds herself in love for the first time.

But the seasonal rains and a devastating earthquake cause the dam to overflow, flooding the city, leaving thousands homeless and prompting a change of heart for both Burton and Taylor.

Remake of The Rains Came (1939), based on the novel by Louis Bromfield.

Academy Award Nomination for Best Special Effects.

In both the 1939 version of Bromfield’s novel, The Rains Came, which kept the novel’s title, and this version were nominated by the Academy Awards for their special effects. Only the 1939 version took home the Oscar, however.
