He Ran All the Way (United Artists 1951, John Garfield, Shelley Winters)

Published

on

In He Ran All The Way, running from the law, a washed-up gangster-turned-cop killer meets an emotionally needy young woman (Shelley Winters) and uses her family home as a hideout. John Garfield (who also co-produced) died shortly after completion of this taut urban twist on High Sierra. A hidden credit was for Dalton Trumbo, who had been blacklisted for his left-wing politics.

Meanwhile two other individuals associated with the making of He Ran All the Way, director John Berry and co-writer Hugo Butler, emigrated to Europe after they were blacklisted in the 1950s.
