River of No Return (TCF 1954, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum)

Rousing western River of No Return, and Preminger’s only outing in the genre, pairs an amiable Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum. On his way back to his farm in the Canadian Rockies after serving a prison term for a killing, Mitchum gathers up his son (Tommy Rettig) and takes note of the saloon singer (Monroe) who had befriended the boy.

When he later saves Monroe and her gambler boyfriend (Rory Calhoun), he gets a gun butt in the head for his bravery but also the admiration of Monroe. After facing off with Calhoun once more, Mitchum claims Monroe for good. Well done and good fun.

Robert Mitchum said this about his legendary co-star: ‘Every time a director yelled, ‘Action!’ she’d break out in a sweat…I mean it. She was scared.’
