Saint Joan (UA 1957, Jean Seberg, Richard Widmark)
After a highly publicized talent hunt, producer-director Otto Preminger launched 17-year-old Iowan Jean Seberg to stardom in this adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play. Inspired by divine voices, Joan of Orleans leads the French army to rout English invaders but is then punished by the Church whose authority she has, unintentionally, thrown into question. Seberg is fresh, appealing, and natural, and a fine cast backs her up.
