Senseless (1998, Marlon Wayans, Brad Dourif)
Penelope Spheeris, best known for Wayne’s World and The Beverly Hillbillies , once again comes up with a cracking comedy, starring Marlon Wayans as student Darryl Witherspoon, who’s behind on tuition fees because he has to support his mother and siblings. Having sold all the blood, semen and hair he can, he volunteers to be a guinea pig for a new drug developed by Dr Wheedon (Brad Dourif) that heightens human senses.
Suddenly, he can hear, smell and see better than any of his fellow students, making him an A-Grade pupil, a star of the hockey team and someone who can ask the sperm bank for a quote for two gallons! But then, he doubles the dose and just when he’s up against the supercilious Scott Thorpe (David Spade) for a position in a top financial firm, his senses start alternately failing, causing no end of trouble with would-be boss Randall Tyson (Rip Torn).
If the humour isn’t quite up to Wayne’s World standards, there are enough sight and sound gags to keep it moving along nicely and his multi-pierced roommate Tim LaFlour (Matthew Lillard, Shaggy from Scooby Doo ) adds to the fun when, concerned that Witherspoon is a heroin addict, decides to stage an startling intervention.
