She’s All That (1999, Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachael Leigh Cook)
In She’s All That popular student Zack (Freddie Prinze Jr) suffers the humiliation of being dumped by Taylor (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), who has fallen for the charms of B-list actor Brock (Matthew Lillard).
As a joke, he claims to have the power to make any girl prom queen. His friends take him literally, offering the mypoic misfit loner Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook) for the Pygmalion treatment. He’s shocked into having to overcome her looks, attitude and, worst of all, lack of money, and his attempts to befriend her end in failure, until a chance meeting at an arts club shows her Zack has a different side to the macho meathead majority. Eventually, Laney decides to stand for prom queen, and Zack is overjoyed until he finds out the identity of her rival: Taylor…
The unlikely lovers make a credible pair, but they are outshone by the wayward O’Keefe and egomaniacal Lillard (who interrupts lovemaking to watch re-runs of his TV show), edging the film toward a Heathers-style satire.
Freddie Prinze Jr was the son of 1970’s sitcom star Freddie Prinze who killed himself midway through the run of his show Chico and the Man.
