Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977, Patrick Wayne, Jane Seymour)
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger is a family fantasy adventure starring Patrick Wayne, Taryn Power and Jane Seymour. The swashbuckling sailor teams up with beautiful Princess Farah to do battle with a herd of animated monsters, and save her brother from the clutches of wicked step-mother Zenobia (Margaret Whiting).
Prince Kassim (Damien Thomas) has been kidnapped by Zenobia and turned into a baboon, and Sinbad and Dione (Power) have only a limited time to rescue him before the transformation becomes permanent. Picking up scantily clad Farah (Seymour) along the way, they scythe through a mythical landscape populated by killer bees, soldier skeletons and a walrus bigger than Barry White, sent to stop their progress by the villainous step-mum.
This was the follow up to The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad and harks back to the Sinbad series and Saturday matinee adventures of the ’40s and ’50s. The difference being, of course, that the animation is far superior – Ray Harryhausen’s ‘Dynamation’ allowing characters to morph with thrilling effect.
Sets are lurid and acting is as hammy as you’d expect (especially from Whiting), but that’s all part of the fun. Interestingly, both leads are played by the offspring of famous actors – John Wayne and Tyrone Power.
