Stardust (2007, Claire Danes, Charlie Cox)

Star studded and wonderfully realised, Stardust is based on Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess’s renowned graphic novel. In a typical idyllic English village young Tristan (Charlie Cox) is in love with the beautiful Victoria (Sienna Miller) and will do anything to get her to overthrow the man she is going to marry. He embarks on a quest to bring her back a fallen star but first he must leave his village and enter the forbidden land beyond the village walls (and also get past the wall keeper – a brilliant cameo from the legendary David Kelly).

Also seeking the star though are the surviving sons of the King (a typically brilliant cameo from Peter O’Toole) of the forbidden land, all of whom need the star (who once fallen takes the shape of Claire Danes and calls herself Yvaine) to be crowned King and whilst these are busy thinking up new ways to bump each other off, there is an evil witch, Lamia (palyed with great glee by Michelle Pfeiffer) who is also after Yvaine because she has the power to restore her beauty.

Tristan must keep Yvaine safe from harm whilst also trying to get her home to his village to show Victoria, along the way they team up a sky pirate called Captain Shakespeare (a cross dressing Robert De Niro) meet a con man played by Ricky Gervais and ultimately realise their true destiny.
