Still of the Night (1982, Meryl Streep, Roy Scheider)
In thriller Still of the Night, after one of his patients is murdered psychiatrist Sam Rice (Roy Scheider) is visited by Brooke Reynolds (Meryl Streep), the dead man’s lover. Sam recalls his client’s problems – paranoia about his involvement in a mysterious death, and a recurrent dream where he is tortured in a remote house, and how his only happiness was derived from his affair with Brooke.
When Sam offers to treat Brooke, she admits feeling only relief at her lover’s death. Investigating further, Sam visits her workplace and is told by detective Joe Vitucci (Joe Grifasi) that the dead man was having an affair, using his psychiatric appointments as a cover.
Taking the easy route to solving the crime, Sam distances himself from Brooke, who appears to implicate herself. But the truth is far from simple, and threatens to place doctor and patient in the frame while the killer walks free…
After turning in the Oscar-magnet Kramer vs. Kramer, Robert Benton reunited with Streep for this Hitchcockian thriller that plays on Spellbound and similar tales of forbidden love.
