Winterset (RKO 1936, Burgess Meredith, Margo)
Based on Maxwell Anderson’s Broadway play, drama Winterset follows Burgess Meredith’s struggle to clear the name of his father who was wrongly executed for killing a cop during a robbery. During his investigation, he becomes involved with the daughter (Margo) of the man who drove the getaway car. Meredith’s screen debut in a role he first played on the stage.
Academy Award Nominations: Best Score; Best Art Direction.
Playwright Maxwell Anderson was also a noted composer who often collaborated with Kurt Weill and Arthur Schwartz.
