20/20: Karen Read: The Perfect Storm (ABC, 6 September 2024)

20/20 Karen Read The Perfect Storm

A new episode of 20/20 examines the controversial case of Karen Read, a finance professional charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Airing on ABC on Thursday, September 6, 2024, at 9:00 p.m., the episode features an exclusive interview with Read by ABC News chief national correspondent Matt Gutman, as she gives her account of the tragic events that led to O’Keefe’s death.

On the morning of January 29, 2022, during a historic blizzard in Massachusetts, O’Keefe was found unresponsive in a pile of snow. 20/20 investigates the events leading up to his death, including the evening he and Read spent socializing with friends before they were invited to continue the night at the home of a fellow Boston police officer. Read claims she dropped O’Keefe off outside the residence and left, but those present at the after-party maintain that O’Keefe never entered the home.

The episode also includes exclusive interviews with O’Keefe’s loved ones, who express their concerns that his legacy has been overshadowed by the media frenzy surrounding the case. They share their memories of O’Keefe as a devoted family member and a dedicated officer.

Read was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision causing death. Prosecutors argue that Read intentionally struck O’Keefe with her SUV during the blizzard, leading to his death. Read has pleaded not guilty, and her legal team refutes the allegations, claiming a cover-up, which the prosecution refutes.
