Correspondent Deborah Roberts takes viewers on a journey as she examines the extensive search conducted by police, questioning individuals who knew Tricia, including a pastor she met on beach walks, a local ventriloquist she was infatuated with, and her ex-husband, Steven Williams. When these initial leads didn’t pan out, the investigation delved deeper into Tricia’s personal life and her relationships.
Tricia Todd, a 30-year-old Air Force veteran and hospice nurse, went missing on April 26, 2016, after spending the day with her ex-husband, Steven Williams, and their 2-year-old daughter, Faith. The day after, Tricia failed to pick up her daughter from the babysitter, which was highly out of character for her. Her car was found near her residence with the keys in the ignition and her purse inside, but both Tricia and her cellphone were gone.
Police discovered security footage of Tricia shopping in a grocery store the night before her disappearance, and her ex-husband confirmed that she had been with him the previous evening but had left after a while. As the investigation progressed, a journal belonging to Tricia was uncovered, revealing a darker side to her ex-husband. It detailed a history of abuse, including kicking her in the stomach when she was pregnant, strangling her dogs, and a desire for her to disappear.
With mounting evidence, including security footage of Steven driving both his car and Tricia’s the night she went missing, authorities focused their suspicions on him. Initially, Steven denied any involvement, but after further questioning, he eventually confessed to the murder, revealing a premeditated plan to kill Tricia and dispose of her body.
The episode features interviews with Marnie Ellis, Tricia’s best friend; Rebecca Hasselbach, Tricia’s mother; Jonathan and Joshua Todd, Tricia’s brothers; and law enforcement officers involved in the case, including Sgt. Dan DuLac and Lt. Yesenia Carde of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
