This Saturday, CBS’s “48 Hours” presents a story of survival, justice, and the ripple effects of violence, in “Facing a Monster.” Correspondent Anne-Marie Green reports on the case of C.C. Opanowski, who survived a brutal attack at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Shawn Doyle, only to see him commit murder years later.
Opanowski speaks to “48 Hours” for the first time about her ordeal, with a firsthand account of the attack, the arduous road to recovery, and the experience of confronting her attacker in court. Doyle initially received a lenient sentence for the assault on Opanowski. Years later, however, he murdered Lori Leonard, a mother of two. This horrifying act throws a harsh light on the system’s failure to protect Opanowski and ultimately prevent Leonard’s death.
Green’s report pieces together the nearly three-decade-long saga, featuring interviews with Lori Leonard’s family members, including her son and sister, as well as insights from a former friend of Doyle and various law enforcement and legal experts connected to the case.
“Facing a Monster” airs Saturday, May 10th at 10:00 PM ET/PT on CBS, following an encore presentation of “The Depraved Heart Murder” at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
