48 Hours on ID looks into the death of 19-year-old college student Cayley Mandadi, a cheerleader at Trinity University, and the subsequent legal proceedings against her boyfriend, Mark Howerton.
Mandadi died in October 2017 during a trip to Houston, and the circumstances surrounding her death raise questions and prompt a quest for justice by her family.
Howerton was charged with Mandadi’s murder in February 2018, a year after her death, and also faced charges of sexual assault and kidnapping. The case proved complex, with Howerton’s first trial in 2019 resulting in a mistrial as the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. However, in his second trial in 2023, Howerton was found guilty of aggravated assault.
The 48 Hours episode explores the relationship between Mandadi and Howerton, revealing that Mandadi was allegedly planning to end the relationship before her death.
