Megan’s parents discovered her at their home with a gunshot wound to the head, and while authorities initially ruled her death as a suicide, her family suspected foul play and believed that her husband, Dustin Parra, was involved. Determined to uncover the truth, Megan’s father, Steve Ducote, obtained death scene photos and presented them to a local judge, successfully persuading them to reopen the case.
The re-examination was led by Commander Dan Schaub of the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office. Schaub meticulously studied the scene photos and a brief report, and he also interviewed neighbors who recalled hearing a gunshot on the morning of Megan’s death, although the exact time remained unclear.
As a result of this thorough investigation, Dustin Parra was charged with negligent homicide. He entered a plea of no contest to the charge.
