60 Minutes: “Disruptor U,” “Humans in the Loop,” and “Lowriders of New Mexico” (CBS, Sunday, November 24, 2024)

60 Minutes Key Art

This Sunday, 60 Minutes is cruising low and slow through the cultural landscape, from the halls of a controversial new university to the ethical dilemmas of AI in Kenya, with a pit stop in New Mexico to admire some tricked-out rides.

First up, Jon Wertheim takes us to the University of Austin, a startup that’s generating buzz, mostly of the critical kind, for its stance against what some call “woke” ideology. Wertheim examines the university’s self-proclaimed mission of intellectual openness, speaking to founders, students, and advisors about their purported attempt to disrupt higher education. Could this be a genuine effort to foster free thought, or just another front in the culture wars? 60 Minutes aims to find out.

Then, Lesley Stahl lands in Nairobi, Kenya, not for a safari, but for a deep dive into the world of “humans in the loop.” These are the individuals training AI for big tech companies, and their stories, Stahl reveals, aren’t always glamorous. Issues like working conditions, low pay, and the potential for psychological trauma paint a complicated picture of the AI boom.

Finally, Bill Whitaker trades his reporter’s notepad for a steering wheel (figuratively, of course) as he explores the lowrider culture of Espanola, New Mexico. Whitaker meets with the “cruisers,” who see themselves not just as car enthusiasts, but as activists, community servants, and preservers of Hispanic culture and art. It’s a look at how a hobby often associated with rebellion can evolve into something more.

60 Minutes airs this Sunday at 7:00 PM ET on CBS.
