This Sunday, Channel 9’s “60 Minutes” delivers a one-two punch of investigative journalism and true crime, tackling corruption in Australia’s construction industry and sitting down with a convicted murderer determined to tell her story.
First up, Nick McKenzie revisits his award-winning investigation into the CFMEU, the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union. His original “Building Bad” reports, a joint effort with The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, exposed a pattern of bullying, intimidation, and corruption within the union, leading to police investigations, dismissals, and even the appointment of an administrator. But in “Building Worse,” McKenzie reveals that the rot runs deeper than anyone imagined. Despite assurances of reform, he finds evidence suggesting that thugs linked to the CFMEU are still allegedly up to their old tricks, exploiting workers and resorting to intimidation tactics.
Then, Amelia Adams secures an interview with Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, recently released from prison after serving time for the 2015 murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. Dee Dee was stabbed 17 times in a crime that shocked the nation. Now, free from prison walls, Blanchard wants to give her version of events, explaining why she, with the help of an online boyfriend, committed such a violent act.
From systemic corruption to a deeply troubled family, “60 Minutes” examines two distinct situations bound by a common theme: the search for answers and the consequences of unchecked power. Tune in to Channel 9 this Sunday, March 16th at 8:40 pm.
