60 Minutes: Nazis Next Door & Capitulation airs Sun 22 Aug on Channel 9

Sunday nights edition of 60 minutes on Channel 9 tackles Nazis and the Taliban.

Nazis Next Door
The neo-Nazi movement in Australia has been dealt a substantial blow. Last week a joint investigation by 60 Minutes, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald into the country’s largest far-right extremist organisation, the National Socialist Network, exposed a degree of evil that is difficult to comprehend: disgusting racism and calls for violent unrest. Pleasingly, the work of the undercover operative who infiltrated and unmasked members of the NSN has had immediate effect. Counter-terrorism police are now conducting fresh investigations, neo-Nazis have been sacked from large companies, and some have even issued public statements recanting their white supremacist views. But despite that, award-winning reporter Nick McKenzie warns it would be foolish to think the extremists won’t regroup, and this week reveals how neo-Nazi leaders overseas are helping to engineer the local fightback.

The utter capitulation of the Afghanistan government and its incompetent army is one thing. More shocking this week has been the humiliation of the American military and its commander-in-chief, President Biden, accused around the world of being weak and indecisive. But most disturbing is the plight of millions of Afghans, especially women and girls, who are abandoned and now staring at futures that look like a return to the dark ages. The Taliban claim they are reformed and promise the transition of power will be peaceful. However, in a fiery interview with one of the Taliban’s leaders, Sarah Abo questions their commitment to reconciliation and receives answers that will do nothing to ease the angst about developments in this troubled country.
