On Saturday evening, Channel 4 presents the second episode of Abandoned Railways From Above, with a unique perspective on Britain’s forgotten railway lines. This episode focuses on the route connecting two renowned academic cities, Oxford and Cambridge, and its pivotal role during World War II.
The line, now abandoned, once buzzed with activity as it transported soldiers, spies, and ammunition, playing a strategic role in Britain’s war efforts. Passing through the Cambridgeshire countryside, nature has reclaimed much of the route, offering a peaceful contrast to its former purpose.
The journey begins at Shuttleworth House, where a tale of tragedy and resilience unfolds. Richard and Dorothy Shuttleworth’s story is revealed, showcasing how they turned a World War II tragedy into something positive and enduring. Moving forward, the episode visits one of Bedfordshire’s few remaining market gardens in Blandford. These gardens, alongside the railways, played a crucial role in ensuring the nation’s food supply during the war.
As the route progresses towards Bletchley, the episode looks at the secretive world of espionage. Spies blended in with ordinary passengers on their way to Bletchley Park, the legendary World War II codebreaking centre. The episode concludes with a surprising revelation about Rewley Road Station, which, despite its name, is no longer part of Oxford.
Abandoned Railways From Above: Oxford airs on Channel 4, Saturday 28 September 2024, at 8:00 PM.
