Abbott Elementary No Phones (ABC, Wednesday, November 5, 2025)

Abbott Elementary Key Art

Every so often, a sitcom finds a premise so simple and universally relatable that the jokes practically write themselves. For Abbott Elementary, that premise is “No Phones Day.” A district-wide initiative designed to get students to unplug becomes a comedic pressure cooker for the faculty, a group of adults who are, in their own ways, just as tethered to their devices as the children they teach. The episode’s title is a declaration, but for a staff that thrives on controlled chaos, it’s really more of a threat.

The beauty of this setup is seeing how each character handles the imposed digital detox. Janine, ever the idealist, will surely embrace the day with a well-intentioned but slightly overbearing enthusiasm. Expect laminated posters about the joys of face-to-face conversation. Gregory will likely appreciate the pedagogical theory behind the day, but his stoic calm will be tested by the inability to text Janine or fact-check a historical query on the fly. Meanwhile, veterans Barbara and Melissa will represent the two poles of old-school adaptation: Barbara, who taught for decades without the internet, will be utterly unfazed, while Melissa will undoubtedly have a contraband burner phone stashed somewhere for her various “deals.”

But the real comedic engine will be Ava. A principal who runs her school largely from her social media feeds is not going to handle a day of digital isolation with grace. Her withdrawal is destined to be a spectacle, a desperate, attention-seeking performance for an audience she can’t immediately post to. Stripped of her primary tool for self-promotion and distraction, Ava will be forced to engage with her staff and students in real-time, a prospect that should worry everyone at Abbott.
