The ABC is launching a new music series titled The Piano, hosted by Amanda Keller, set to premiere this May. The show, based on a UK original, centres on amateur pianists performing in public spaces, unaware they are being judged by music professionals.

Here’s the Lowdown: Premiering Sunday, May 4th at 7:30 pm on ABC TV, The Piano invites everyday Australians to play pianos placed in various public locations. While they perform for passersby, accomplished musicians Harry Connick, Jr. and Andrea Lam watch secretly, tasked with selecting pianists to mentor.

The Bigger Picture: The pianists chosen by Connick Jr. and Lam will receive guidance before performing at Sydney’s City Recital Hall. The show aims to explore music’s ability to connect people. In connection with the series, the ABC and Piano Plus are also placing donated pop-up pianos in up to 20 towns across Australia, allowing communities to nominate locations. All episodes will be available on ABC iview from May 4th.
