ABC’s 20/20 is revisiting one of the most talked-about true crime cases in recent memory—a murder that upended the competitive cycling world and triggered an international pursuit.
Airing Friday, June 27, 2025, at 9:01 PM EDT, the two-hour special revisits the killing of rising star Anna Moriah Wilson, who was found shot dead in Austin, Texas, just days before a major race in May 2022. What followed was a 43-day manhunt that led authorities to a beach town in Costa Rica, and a trial that exposed layers of obsession, deception, and denial.
The accused: Kaitlin Armstrong, a yoga instructor with ties to the cycling scene through her on-again, off-again partner Colin Strickland. Prosecutors argued that Armstrong, after learning of Strickland’s past relationship with Wilson, tracked down the young athlete and murdered her in a calculated act of jealousy.
The broadcast, led by Matt Gutman, chief national correspondent for ABC News, includes exclusive interviews with prosecutors, witnesses, and those who knew Armstrong before and after the killing. That includes her father, Mike Armstrong, who speaks on camera about the trial and his daughter’s ongoing appeal. Also featured is Nicole Mertz, a former friend who says Armstrong had previously made disturbing remarks about Wilson.
Footage from neighbors and firsthand accounts from Costa Rican locals help reconstruct Armstrong’s movements while on the run. Prosecutors Rickey Jones and Guillermo Gonzalez, alongside Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza, provide detailed insight into how the case was built and won.
The trial ended with a guilty verdict in November 2023, but the case remains active, with Armstrong now appealing her conviction.
The special will stream on Hulu the day after its ABC broadcast.
