HBO will chronicle the turbulent career of one of baseball’s most polarizing figures in Alex vs Arod, a new three-part documentary series set to debut on November 6. The project comes from directors Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew, the team behind the Tom Brady documentary Man in the Arena, and features extensive interviews with Alex Rodriguez as he confronts his own legacy.
The series centers on the conflict between “Alex,” the young baseball prodigy, and “A-Rod,” the superstar persona whose ambition led to both record-breaking success and career-defining scandal. Through interviews with Rodriguez, the documentary tracks his journey from his first overall draft pick status to his high-profile suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Each of the three weekly installments will cover a distinct era of his public life. The documentary will begin with his rapid rise with the Seattle Mariners and his controversial contract with the Texas Rangers. It will then cover his move to the New York Yankees, his 2009 championship, and the tabloid frenzy that surrounded his personal life. The final part will focus on the 2013 exposé that led to Major League Baseball’s longest-ever PED suspension and his eventual return to the sport.
To provide a full picture of his career, the series includes insights from several key figures. Participants include Baseball Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Ken Griffey Jr., his former manager Lou Piniella, and broadcasters Katie Couric and Mike Francesa. The documentary also features Rodriguez’s family, including his daughters Natasha and Ella.
