All-Star Makeover Show “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge” Announced by HGTV
HGTV’s newest competition series, Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, will debut its life-size renovation of the iconic Mattel toy, Barbie® Dreamhouse this July, creating the largest, boldest, and most whimsical home of all time, just days before the highly anticipated release of the Warner Bros. Pictures film Barbie.
What is the series about
The four-part event series hosted by supermodel, designer, author, and entrepreneur Ashley Graham will premiere on HGTV on Sunday, July 16, at 8PM ET/PT, and will follow eight teams of HGTV superstars and one celebrated Food Network chef as they transform a home in Southern California into a real-life Barbie Dreamhouse. And one lucky Barbie fan will get to spend the night in the finished house for free!
Some of the biggest names in Hollywood will make surprise appearances in Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge. The competition will be judged by Jonathan Adler, a renowned designer and frequent collaborator with Barbie, and HGTV designer and Barbie Dreamhouse expert Tiffany Brooks, who will each be joined by a different celebrity guest judge each week. A light-up dance floor and an aquarium that doubles as a desk are just two examples of the bold designs that each team will implement throughout the home in each episode. Other brilliant toyetic elements include a hat carousel in Barbie’s closet and a combination pet elevator/phone booth in the living room. A final contribution to Save the Children will be made in honor of the winning design team.
Week by week
Ashley and the other contestants will be given a mind-blowing Barbie surprise during their visit to Mattel headquarters, which will be featured in the show’s extended 90-minute premiere. First up in the competition is the expert building duo of Jasmine Roth (Help! I Wrecked My House) and Antonia Lofaso (Beachside Brawl) taking on the dynamic duo of Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson (Married to Real Estate) in the real estate and design arena.
The entryway, living room, and dining room will be transformed into an over-the-top pink paradise by Egypt and Mike, who will draw inspiration from the neon 1990s Barbie style. Using space-age features like appliances that appear at the touch of a button and sleek mid-century accents, Jasmine and Antonia will create a stunning kitchen and family room from the 1960s. Creator of the original Black Barbie, Kitty Black Perkins, will make a cameo appearance.
Week two of the HGTV home design and renovation experts’ season-long competition continues. While Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin (Farmhouse Fixer) draw inspiration from 1980s glam to bring to life the primary suite, celebrity guest judge Nischelle Turner (Entertainment Tonight) will evaluate the work of Ty Pennington (Rock the Block) and Alison Victoria (Windy City Rehab), who create a groovy Disco-themed 1970s den for Ken.
In week three, the exterior and yard of the house will get a toy-riffic 1990s spin from Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas of Bargain Block, while the backyard of the home will be transformed into an outrageous Y2K era wonderland by Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt of 100 Day Dream Home, to be judged by celebrity guest Marsai Martin of Black-ish.
Christina Hall and James Bender (Christina on the Coast) have designed a futuristic closet and dressing room in tribute to Barbie’s signature style for the show’s finale. Barbie will have a stylish workplace created by Michel Smith Boyd and Anthony Elle Williams (Luxe for Less). Christian Siriano, celebrity guest and fashion designer, will be the one to evaluate the rooms.
