SBS On Demand is toasting a victory lap this month, celebrating its highest-ever user figures. The streaming service saw a surge in viewership, thanks in no small part to the gripping survival series “Alone Australia” and the final season of the dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The platform’s consumption has jumped by a healthy 18% in FY25, with over 2.24 million active accounts logging in during April alone. “Alone Australia” led the charge, reaching an impressive 2.68 million viewers nationally. “The Handmaid’s Tale” followed close behind with 2.31 million viewers, while the second season of “Rogue Heroes” also drew a substantial 2.24 million.
What’s particularly interesting about these figures is the digital breakdown. Around 40% of the “Alone Australia” audience streamed the series on SBS On Demand, and that number jumps to 50% within the 25-54 demographic, suggesting a savvy digital audience for the survivalist series.
The success of these shows translates into more than just bragging rights; it’s proven commercially fruitful for SBS. Moreover, the popularity of flagship programs like “Rogue Heroes” appears to have a halo effect, drawing viewers to explore other content on the platform. SBS Media is understandably pleased, touting its ability to connect audiences with compelling stories.
