Amazon’s Prime Video has decided to bring the curtain down on its period fantasy drama series, “My Lady Jane”, just over a month after releasing all eight episodes of its first season. Based on the novel of the same name by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, the show combined elements of romance and alternate-world fantasy.
Set in 16th-century England, “My Lady Jane” depicted a world where humans coexisted with shape-shifters, who could transform between human and animal forms, referred to as Ethians. The story centred on Jane Grey (portrayed by Emily Bader), an ordinary human or “Verity”, who finds herself sympathising with the oppressed Ethians as she ascends to a position of power.
Despite favourable reviews from critics, who praised the show’s unique blend of genres, “My Lady Jane” failed to capture a large audience. It did not feature in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts in the month following its release, indicating a relatively low viewership.
The series boasted a notable cast, including Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent, and Ollie Chris, who served as the narrator. Behind the scenes, Gemma Burgess created the series and acted as co-showrunner with Meredith Glynn. They executive-produced alongside director Jamie Babbit, Sarah Bradshaw, and Laurie MacDonald.
My Lady Jane was an Amazon MGM Studios. Season one is still available for streaming on Prime Video.
