American Masters: Hazel Scott, a Forgotten Pioneer (PBS, Friday, February 21, 2025)

American Masters

PBS’s American Masters takes a look Hazel Scott, a jazz virtuoso, civil rights pioneer, and the first Black American woman to host her own television show. This episode aims to rescue Scott from undeserved obscurity, exploring her remarkable life, her fight for equality, and the devastating impact of the Red Scare on her career.

Scott’s story is one of both triumph and tragedy. A musical prodigy, she achieved international fame for her jazz piano skills. But her outspoken activism made her a target during the McCarthy era, leading to her being blacklisted and ultimately driving her into exile.
