Thirty-five years. That’s a lot of groin shots, face-plants into snowmen, and cats attacking Christmas trees. ABC’s venerable “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” the undisputed king of capturing holiday mishaps, is marking this milestone with a special aptly titled “AFV’s Wreck the Halls: 35 Years of Holiday Hijinks.” So, if your family traditions lean more toward watching Uncle Jerry set the eggnog on fire than caroling, this Sunday’s installment is tailor-made for you.
This isn’t just another clip show. “Wreck the Halls” promises to deliver a curated collection of the show’s greatest holiday-themed hits. Think kids encountering Santa for the first time (and promptly bursting into tears), elaborate light displays going horribly, hilariously wrong, and enough eggnog-fueled pratfalls to fill Santa’s sleigh.
The episode will revisit fan-favorite segments, from tiny tots wreaking havoc on carefully wrapped presents to adults making questionable choices with mistletoe. And, of course, there will be pets. Lots of pets. Because nothing says holiday cheer quite like a cat tangled in tinsel or a dog devouring the Christmas ham.
Let’s face it, while most networks churn through trendy, short-lived programming, “AFV” has endured. It’s a comforting presence, a reminder that no matter how disastrous your own holiday season might be, someone out there probably has it worse (and it’s probably caught on camera).
“AFV’s Wreck the Halls: 35 Years of Holiday Hijinks” airs Sunday, December 1st at 7 PM on ABC.
